Festival Internacional de Jazz de Angra do Hero\u00edsmo<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 19\u00b0 ANGRAJAZZ – Festival International de Jazz de Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, takes place in Terceira Island in Azores, October 04th<\/sup> to 07th<\/sup> , 2017. \u00a0Terceira is a small and beautiful island, with a population of 55 000 people. \u00a0The city of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo is classified as World Heritage Patrimony by UNESCO.<\/p>\n

Angrajazz is organized by a non-profit association \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Cultural Angrajazz \u2013 with the support of Angra\u2019s City Council, the Regional Departments of Culture and Tourism, Tourism of Portugal, and many private sponsors.\u00a0 For the last eighteen years, a great number of the world\u2019s most important jazz musicians have played at Angrajazz – \u00a0please click in Gallery.<\/p>\n

This year takes place the 19th<\/sup> edition of Angrajazz.\u00a0 It is a festival which is a reference in Portugal, one of the main cultural events of the Azores Islands, and one important way to promote the city of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, Terceira Island, and Azores Autonomous Region.<\/p>\n

Angrajazz takes place at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, which is prepared as a big jazz club – 550 persons. \u00a0This year the festival occurs in four nights – double concerts in three of them and a single concert in the second night. \u00a0There will be musicians from Azores, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Cuba, Argentina and USA.<\/p>\n

The program opens on Wednesday 04th<\/sup>, with the Angrajazz Orchestra celebrating the \u201c2017 Five Jazz Centennials\u201d, followed by the French pianist Baptiste Trotignon with the Argentinian percussionist Minimo Garay.<\/p>\n

The second day, Thursday 05th<\/sup>, there will be a unique concert, dedicated to celebrate Thelonious Monk\u2019s Centennial.\u00a0 \u00a0The American veteran trumpet player Charles Tolliver, leading his tentet, will have that responsibility.\u00a0 The Charles Tolliver\u2019s Tentet will reenact the historic Thelonious Monk\u2019s 1959 Town Hall concert.\u00a0 The Tentet will play Tolliver\u2019s definitive transcription of the lost scores of arranger Hal Overton\u2019s orchestrations of Thelonious\u2019 music, exactly as it was performed and recorded at the original 1959 concert.<\/p>\n

The third day, Friday 06th<\/sup>, will begin with the Portuguese octet – Ensemble Super Moderne. This ensemble brings together some of the most interesting values of the new generation of Portuguese jazz.\u00a0 The octet will be followed by one of the leading contemporary jazz quartets \u2013 The Matt Wilson Quartet \u2013 whose leader is recognized for his musical and melodic drumming style, as well as being a gifted composer, bandleader, producer, and teaching artist.<\/p>\n

On the fourth day, Saturday 07th<\/sup>, the singer\/violinist Yilian Ca\u00f1izares – revelation of the year by French weekly Le Novel Observateur – will open the night with her Switzerland\/Cuba Quintet, followed by the excellent quartet of Jon Irabagon, winner of the Rising Star Alto Saxophone and the Rising Star Tenor Saxophone categories in the DownBeat Magazine Critics\u2019 pool.\u00a0 This will be an exciting night, closing the 19\u00ba edition of Angrajazz.<\/p>\n

During the festival, at the foyer of the Centro Cultural, there will be a CD fair with the presence of two of the main Portuguese distributors, a selling desk of Angrajazz merchandizing, and an exposition dedicated to the \u201c2017 Five Jazz Centennials\u201d, responsibility of the Biblioteca P\u00fablica Luis da Silva Ribeiro (the Public Library of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo).<\/p>\n

Besides the seven main concerts at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos, there will be nine other concerts starting from September 29th<\/sup> to October 07th.\u00a0 This concerts \u2013 JAZZ NA RUA \u00a0(Jazz on the Street) \u2013 will happen at different hours and places in the city, and will feature two local jazz groups \u2013 Wave Jazz Ensemble and Sara Miguel Quartet \u2013 and the Portuguese guitar duo Mano a Mano (Bruno e Andr\u00e9 Santos).\u00a0 There will also be two workshops dedicated to students \u2013 one at Biblioteca P\u00fablica Luis da Silva Ribeiro and another one at Escola EBS Tom\u00e1s de Borba.<\/p>\n

Beginning of October is certainly a great time to visit Terceira Island – enjoy the best jazz and (re)discover a very singular and beautiful Island.<\/p>\n
